Swadlincote in the news

Swadlincote Round Table have been in the news recently to announce their first ever Cheap Car Challenge in aid of sufferers of rare genetic disease familial adenomateous polposis (FAP).

The challengers will travel from Swadlincote to Edinburgh, to London and Cardiff and then back to Swadlincote in a vehicle which must cost less than £200. The challenge will take place over three days from July 17 to July 19 and the first to arrive back wins the much sought-after Capital City Cheap Car Charity Challenge trophy (or the Six Cs).

Chairman of Swadlincote Round Table Stacey Ash said: “This idea started off as a desire to raise money for a specific cause. One of our members’ family suffered from this particularly nasty genetic disease and through them we realised that there was not much support in the way of groups to help with issues concerning the disease. By raising money we hope sufferers will be able to attend these support groups.”

You can read the full story in the Burton Mail here. There are also more details on Swad’s new website.

Rebirth of the Challenge Trophy

The Geoff Hine Challenge Trophy

The Geoff Hine Challenge Trophy

The Geoff Hine Challenge Trophy was started in 1956 to encourage the clubs of Area 14 to take each other on in a variety of sporting challenges. As with all things Roundtable, “sporting” is meant in its loosest possible sense. Challenges of the past have included table tennis, pub sports, badminton, rugby, golf, and many other mainstream sporting activities. But other challenges include Tippit (no, I’ve no idea either), marbles, Cardinal Puff-Puff (nope, still no idea), battleships, conkers, hop-scotch (surely some Ladies Circle ringers involved there), blow football (Circle here too?), wobbly ball, grave digging (!!), cranking (possiby a spelling mistake), and nut sucking (enough said, I think).

The trophy itself is the book of challenges as pictured. Lost in the archives since the mid 90’s, 2009/10 Area Chairman George Loydall has rediscovered it and dusted it off so that all the clubs in Area can compete again in whatever weird and wonderful events they can dream up.

The first official event to decide who has the trophy is Welly-Wanging at the Area Camp, Saturday 20th June.

Chairman George and his amazing melons

George03

You don't get many of those to the pound

Fortunately for the editor of this website, Ralph Willis from Derby Merlin had his camera on hand to capture incoming Area 14 Chairman George’s marvelous display of vegetable fondling at the recent Area AGM (see story below). George was definitely in his element copping a feel of some frankly stupendous melons presented by the lovely ladies from Circle.

Size doesn't matter, apparently

Can anyone explain why George saved his biggest smile for the next one?
